This houseplant is named after Bartolomeo Maranta--an Italian physician and botanist of the sixteenth century. It is also called a 'Prayer Plant' for its leaves fold up like praying hands at night. This popular tricolor variety has deep green, velvety leaves with yellow splotches and arching red veins traveling to the leaf margins.
